First Amendment – Updated

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law…abridging the freedom of speech.

Phil Robertson
I respect an honest man. Phil Robertson was asked his opinion and based his answer on what he believes, not what is popular. Unfortunately our society no longer allows a person to express their opinion if it is not “politically correct”.

“I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity.”
– Phil Robertson

What happened to freedom of speech?

  1. Hey Patrick,
I’m absolutely of the opinion that freedom of speech is vital and must be respected. I haven’t read the specific quotes from Phil Robertson (I’ve only heard that there were anti-gay remarks). Without the context of the specific language used, I can’t really weight in one way or another. I know that in other related past news items, the argument tends to be when freedom of speech crosses the line to hate speech. It’s a tough call, and definitely can make the black and white of the rights of the first amendment turn to shades of grey. I support your right to support Phil though.

    1. Nancy,

If you are interested here is the link to the article:

What the media has latched onto is Phil Robertson’s paraphrase from 1 Corinthians 6:8-10:

No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren! Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. (NKJV)

If you say you believe in Jesus and the Bible, you can’t take a razor blade and cut out the parts that others might find offensive.

As always, I appreciate the chance to discuss interesting subjects. Thanks for commenting!

      1. Thanks for the link. I don’t watch this show, but having read through this interview it’s clear that Phil and I don’t see eye to eye on much. That said, I respect everyone’s right to espouse their own truths. Even when they don’t align with mine.

  2. Pat, I gotta disagree with you here. The first ammendment allows one to say what they want to say AND people to dislike what one says and speak and act accordingly, as long as those actions are legal.

    1. I agree with you Amy. That is what freedom of speech should be about. But when someone shares what they believe is true, they should not be vilified by the press. On top of that, what they said should not be twisted because someone else does not share the same values and beliefs. Thanks for joining the discussion! Pat
