Choosing To Be Happy – No. 55

What appears to be a blurred picture of a chain is actually an elegant solution from Japan. For those who have been hanging out at the Red Dog Garage for a while, you know I have a beautiful old house with a wrap around front porch. If you own an old house you have to be one of two people. You are either extremely wealthy or very handy at fixing everything that wears out, rots out, and good at killing whatever takes up residence under your old house. If you don’t understand the last one, search for “extremely deadly rat trap” in you favorite search engine and you will find my blog listed as number one. Don’t believe me? Go check it out…I will still be here.

My old house has only four corners. Of the four corners, the only low spot is the gutter that shares the corner with the beautiful wrap around front porch. As I stood in the yard and took stock of this problem, I quickly concluded another down spout would not work. One, it would be ugly. Two, it would still be ugly. Three, I gave up on this idea.

Having seen “rain chains” on other homes I thought this would be a possible solution, until I discovered that I was not wealthy once again. So back to being a handy old house owner. After conducting an extensive search of commercially available chain, which is a fraction of the cost of a “designer rain chain”, I now had a plan and the tools to execute the plan. Did I happen to mention that I’m also handy at fixing things? Now I just needed a coupon for 15% off one item at my local hardware store since I’m handy, not wealthy.

Being an old house owner also teaches one the patience of Job.

Eventually the stars lined up and a coupon showed up through the wonders of the interweb. So as you can see, I now have a rain chain draining my low gutter for a fraction of the cost minus 15%. Oh, the blurry picture of the chain is actually water running down the chain. Actually very cool science.

  1. I’d never heard of a rain chain. Very cool!

p.s. I arrived home yesterday from my 5 day trip to Vancouver and discovered my prize on the kitchen counter. My husband hadn’t opened it (but was super curious about who Patrick was and why he was mailing me a letter 🙂
    Thanks so much!

    1. The prices are outrageous. Most of it has to do with them being made of copper, bronze, or stainless steel. All expensive materials. It has been raining for three days now. I’m happy because I was going to have to start watering the Tulips that are now just breaking through the ground.
