Lisa and I, along with Maggie and Sally, have embarked on the 52 Hike Challenge.
Our adventure begins with a hike along the Devil’s Slide Trail. This hiking area was created as a result of a pair of tunnels that were built to bypass the unstable geology along California’s Highway 1 south of Pacifica. As we walked along the trail, a gentleman, who hikes this path every day, greeted us. We learned that Dwayne is 79 years young and is a retired doctor who performed reconstructive surgery on soldiers injured by war. As we continued along the trail with Dwayne, he pointed out the various geological features, Peregrine Falcon’s nesting area, native plants, and other trivia. This first hike was not only beautiful, but we also spent time walking with someone who loves life. Each and every person along this trail was greeted by Dwayne. He always stated how fortunate we all were to be enjoying a beautiful day. I left inspired by Dwayne’s passion for life and that at age 79, he is out hiking and enjoying life. A true inspiration that I did not expect on this first hike.
