The Collective

Central Park was full of people as we passed through while walking Maggie and Sally. Some were enjoying a Sunday afternoon with family and friends, but many more were just staring into the palm of their hand. They seemed unaware of the beauty around them as they milled about in a group. Only a few talked as they searched for something elusive. As we walked away, Lisa and I discussed this latest phenomena. Over dinner I shared that this behavior reminded me of the fictional characters in the Star Trek series call the Borg, which is an alien race that appear as recurring antagonists to the Federation. The Borg are a collection of species that have been turned into cybernetic organisms functioning as drones called “the Collective”. The Borg use a process called assimilation to force other species into the Collective by injecting microscopic machines called nanoprobes. Each Borg functions as part of a sub group but ultimately is controlled by everyone in the Collective. Thankfully neither Lisa nor I have been assimilated into this latest fad. I have no doubt that with time people will discover how they have been assimilated into a world that does not exist and will look up to see what they have been missing.

  1. It’s a different world, say the least. Kids and youngsters are hooked so much with online games, IG,… it’s not funny.
    Thank you for sharing, Patrick!
